Kettles

Kettles are devices used to heat water for making hot drinks, such as tea and coffee. There are two types of kettles – one that you place on the burner of the stove and another that sits on your countertop and is powered by electricity. The kettles that sit on the stove usually have a whistle that sounds when the water is boiled so that you can remove them from the heat source. The electric kettles automatically shut off when the water is boiled. This is so that the heating element in the appliance won’t get damaged and the water won’t boil away.

Prior to the invention of the whistling kettle, this device had to be watched when it was on the stove so that all the water would not evaporate into steam leaving the kettle dry. If this happened, the kettle would burn up on the stove and could cause a fire. The earliest electric kettles had the cord attached so that you had to unplug it when the water boiled. Cordless kettles came on the market in the 1980’s and 1990’s. These models were attached to a base that plugged in or the cord could be detached from the kettle itself.

Kettles are commonly constructed from durable plastic or steel. They each have a handle made of plastic and a spout for pouring the water into a cup. In the cordless models of electric kettles, the heating elements are located in the base. This metal helps to bring the water to its boiling point. When you fill the kettle with water and set it on the base, you have to click the on button to set this process in motion. The sensor in the kettle will automatically shut the kettle off when the water boils.

There are models on the market that boil the water super fast. Some that only boil enough for one cup, which are much more energy efficient.
